Ukraine´s Health Minister Maksym Stepanov said last week the country hoped to receive 8 million doses of a COVID-19 vaccine in the first half of next year under the global COVAX Facility, which has been set up to provide the vaccine to poorer countries.

Facebook routinely pulls down networks of fake accounts, but it’s unusual for the company to look at accounts that are no longer posting content. The move raises questions about what fake accounts Facebook might have missed in the past, but it also shows the company is thinking about ways people might try to get back onto the platform after they’re booted from the social network. 

“The number of copies has gone down, but we have also seen that people have much more used our website, apps and social media. The catalogue became less and less important,” said Konrad Gruss, Managing Director at franchisor Inter IKEA Systems – a division of brand owner Inter IKEA Group.

Facebook discovered the older accounts while it was looking into the Proud Boys, a far-right men’s group, and their attempt to return to the social network after they were barred from the platform in 2018. Stone, convicted last year in federal court of seven felonies, including obstructing a congressional investigation into Russia’s 2016 election interference, has ties to the Proud Boys. Search warrants related to the congressional investigation included allegations that Stone had purchased hundreds of fake Facebook accounts. 

In an interview with SiriusXM’s Jim Norton & Sam Roberts Show on Thursday, Stone denied the allegations. “The charge that I owned hundreds of fake Facebook pages is categorically false. It’s just not true,” he said.

KYIV, Nov 26 (Reuters) – Ukraine is seeking a $100 million loan from the World Bank to buy doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, deputy health minister Svitlana Shatalova said on Thursday, as the number of new infections in the country hit a daily record high.

Gleicher said the network of older accounts predates his time at the company and the social network’s policies against what’s called “coordinated inauthentic behavior.” Around 2016, he said, Facebook was focused on foreign interference in elections and the older fake accounts also tied to Stone didn’t get a lot of engagement.

Facebook said Wednesday that it pulled down a network of older fake accounts that were linked to Roger Stone, a former political adviser to President Donald Trump and a convicted felon, and his associates. 

In the commission’s first findings, it said the overall spread and previously known structural problems within the elderly care system, for which the current and previous governments were ultimately responsible, were to blame for the many deaths.

Some of the fake Facebook pages garnered a following from Pakistan and Egypt. About 260,000 accounts followed at least one of these fake Pages. Roughly 61,500 people followed at least one of these Instagram accounts. 

“For each of these (networks), there’s a risk that between now and the election they could pivot to start to engage in the United States and so we’re proactively removing them to prevent that risk from occurring,” said Nathaniel Gleicher, who heads security policy at Facebook during a press conference.

The two countries have repeatedly clashed in recent years over what Hungary said were curbs on the rights of around 150,000 ethnic Hungarians living in Ukraine to use their native tongue, especially in education, after Ukraine passed a law in 2017 restricting the use of minority languages in schools.

Some of the fake accounts posed as Florida residents and posted about local politics, Stone’s trial, 2016 US presidential candidates and Stone’s Facebook Pages, websites, books and media appearances. Graphika, which analyzed the fake accounts tied to Stone, said the accounts “showed particular hostility” toward 2016 Democratic US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. 

The social network removed 54 Facebook accounts, 50 pages and four Instagram accounts tied to Stone and his associates for violating its rules against misleading others about their identity and purpose. The accounts were most active between 2015 to 2017 and some had already been deleted. 

The network of Russian-linked accounts that had the most following were tied to Russian intelligence services. Facebook pulled 23 Facebook accounts, 6 Pages, and 8 Instagram accounts in this network. They posed as editors and researchers to get people to write articles for their sites. They posted about politics in various countries including the US. About 59,000 accounts followed one or more of these Pages and around 2,000 people followed one or more of these Instagram accounts.
